Acrobat PDF

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a universal file format developed by Adobe Systems that preserves all the fonts, formatting, graphics, and colour of any source document, regardless of the application and platform used to create it.

PDF captures formatting information from a variety of desktop publishing applications, making it possible to send formatted documents and have them appear on the recipient's monitor or printer as they were intended. To view a file in PDF format, you need Adobe Reader, a free application distributed by Adobe Systems. You can also find Preview on MAC OS X and PDF Viewer on Linux as means for reading PDF file. By the time this article is writing, Mozilla is working on a project that will add PDF rendering to Firefox using HTML5 and JavaScript.
